The bathroom is cray right now.

bathroom progress with comments

It’s impressive that The Mister and I haven’t committed double suicide. The main thing getting me through is the thought of how much better it will be. Here’s what we’re doing:

  • Filling in the walls and fixing poorly done jobs in the past (jobs done by previous owner)
  • Removing everything from walls
  • Sanding the walls
  • Repainting the walls and the wall cabinet
  • Replacing the medicine cabinet, air vent and shower shelf
  • Replacing doors and hardware on wall cabinet
  • Glazing the tub (we’re hiring this out)

The main thing that has my attention is painting. I have purchased an unreasonable amount of paint samples (you can see some of them on the top shelf above the toilet) trying desperately to match our vintage blue tile and it ain’t gonna happen.

I don’t like the solid blue “treatment” that we’ve had and I feel like doing plain white is…boring. So, much to The Mister’s side-eye glances, I want to hand paint a wall treatment. I’d love to do something like this.

But I’m being realistic. So, I have a few other ideas. It’s either I go with something more formal (potentially stenciled) or I go with something more free form.

Option 1:  Something more formal or stenciled
First, we have Higgledy Piggledy Stripe. This wallpaper is by the amazing Anna Spiro for Porter’s Paint. I would do a “knock off” of this pattern. I think it’s the middle ground of free form and formal.

Second, we have Albert Hadley’s iconic Fireworks.

Albert Hadley makes my heart swell. However, I don’t know if I trust myself with a stencil. They seem hard. I know there are DIY pins of them everywhere, but I’m not talking about a trellis pattern or some gloss paint over flat paint. I’m talking about a knock off of an iconic designer and print. I don’t think I can do it.

Option 2: Something more loose or free form

First, we have David Hockney painting his pool.

Then, we have samples of free form thin stripes.

Alexander hand painted stripes for Kate Spade

In either option, I  would likely do a white background with the darker blue stripes to match the top (gray blue) tile in our bath. Though this last photo of many different colors is quite pretty, it could easy become too much for all the walls.

So, what do you think? Free form or stenciled?

Friday, The Mister and I went to The Black Keys concert with one of our friends. We had General Admission tickets and it was awesome.

20130505-211618.jpg

I was quite hungover the next day. Here’s some evidence of my good time.

Black Keys concert

I adore my friend and have known him since my Freshman year of college. We reconnected a few years ago after finding out we were both in Nashville. (Thanks to Mr. Zuckerberg.) I love him and would never show what’s under that circle. I wasn’t the only one that had drank too much.  These were just the pre-show drinks at Bridgestone between the three of us.

Black Keys pre show drinks

We had been drinking before this and we didn’t stop either.

We went to the headless friend’s birthday party Saturday night. I drank only Sprite. Beyond going out we played it fairly lazy. Sunday, we walked around the yard and worked on a plan for planting some boxwoods we purchased two weeks ago and the back yard.

I’ve kept the back yard from you because it’s embarrassing. We have a potentially awesome area of the yard that looks awful. Really awful. The previous owners put in a retaining wall poorly. It appears to a great example of a DIY gone wrong. The brick walls have mostly fallen down. We started cleaning it up and quickly became overwhelmed at the scope of the project. We think we finally know what to do and how to fix it. We loved this patio space when we bought the house. We had big plans for a fire pit, big chairs and parties. We want to make it right. This is what it looks like now.

back yard pit

The Mister is working on the space this week. It will not be anywhere near done but we are setting a lofty goal of having the major work done by July. There are some other major projects that are being done at the same time. It’s going to be hectic summer. However, it’s gonna be great and I can’t wait to share it with you.

Be good. Be safe. Be lovely.

Today’s post is a twofer. You get a War Paint Wednesday (Clarisonic idea) and a before and after. Don’t get use to the over achievement.

We took down the towel holder in the bath awhile back. It was not centered over the toilet (see the photo here) and was looking shabby. However, we didn’t expect to see this under it.

spot from towel holder in bath

We put a fake plant in front of it for well over a year (you can see that here) and have wondered what to do. We considered “stealing” a tile from behind the toilet but the tiles are set in such strong mortar we were fearful of it. Finally, I realized a hook would cover it well and was actually needed.

I looked at many hooks online and at the usual suspects – Lowes and Home Depot. I purchased a few and returned them. As most of them were brushed nickel and we needed chrome. Additionally, most of the backs/plates were too big or too small. A few weeks went by and I happened down the bath aisle at Home Depot, the one with the towel rack collections and such, and found this.

futura hooks from home depot

Seriously, I thought I heard trumpets.

The screw for it was on the underneath. So, we could still insert it but it wouldn’t require the same amount of work to look drilled in. (We have no desire to drill into the tile.) It was chrome and the styling fits the style of the bath. It was simple and a rectangle. I was sure it was the same size as the spot. I grabbed two and practically ran to find The Mister.

The Mister grabbed some mounting tape before we left. We chose Scotch’s Extreme Mounting Tape. We probably could have used something less “extreme” as it doesn’t need to hold 20 pounds. However, we decided it was better to be safe with too much than risk them falling off or being shabby. We would suggest using it if you’re doing a similar project.

Luckily, I was right and the hook was almost the exact same size as the spot in the tile. So, we quickly tackled this project. The screw in the bottom of the hook kept the flat mounting plate in place.

back of futura hook

Then, we added a small strip of mounting tape to the mounting plate.

back of hook with mounting tape

The Mister was a little nervous with putting them on the tile. It’d be reversible if not put on correctly, but I was being pretty specific on their placement. Finally, he agreed that I should just do it. I removed the red protective lining from the tape and lined the top of the hook to the top of the spot on the tile. Then, I pressed it on. I used a good amount of pressure.

I was super jazzed and put the other one up. Though the left side of our tile did not have a spot, I felt another hook was needed for balance and to look purposeful.

bath hooks

Here’s how I use the hooks in “real life.” (This is not totally true as the right hook usually has a face towel on it. I was washing them when I took the photo.)

clarisonic hook

Using it as a holder for The Clarisonic has been awesome for letting it dry. It was a happy surprise. I have found that when I try to dry my Clarisonic, usually the bristles get smushed on one side and heads are not cheap. So, I’m hoping this will extend the life of them. Full disclosure: you have to hit it at the right angle for it to stay. I haven’t gotten it to stay every time. It usually take a few tries. I gotta find the sweet spot.

We’ve had the hooks up for about a month and have had no issues. I’m so glad we found the hooks and it was a simple project. It looks tremendously better. Young House Love tackled the same kind of towel bar spots in their tile here (a good fix if it’s under the window) and here (I like our fix better for by the sink. However, it’s a good idea for above the toilet.)

I finished upholstering our headboard. Here’s a sneaky peak.

headboard against curtains

We have a load of dirt (a whole truck of it) showing up this morning. We’re planting boxwoods and working on our landscape. Obviously, my house is going to look like this after this weekend.

Churchill cottage, birmingham

That would be the Best. Weekend. Ever.

This is still on clearance.

I want two, because I need more accent tables.

It’s gone down to $49.98 since this originally posted. Oh y’all. The temptation.

The past few weeks have been a blur. I ask that everyone schedule their annual physical, have patience as the blog goes through some big changes and it would be pretty swell if you would consider being part of this study.

We’re I’m playing a game called “Table Switcheroo.” It involves me changing the tables around our living room/main room of the house’s couch. There have been a few options, but I think I’m sticking with the small round campaign ones.

First, I cleaned off the lucite console and lugged it over.

20130404-161648.jpg

Too big.

Then, I went decidedly smaller.

20130404-161759.jpg

We will discuss the awesome lamps later.

20130405-062615.jpg

We’re sticking with these for awhile.

I like their smaller scale. The room feels lighter. However, they’re half the size of what we used to have there. I’m sticking with them as I believe their scale is fine. Here are some pretty photos that show I’m right – little tables by sofas work.

I walk (ran more than planned) The Color Run. It was fun but three days later, I’m still trying to scrub color off my body. The back of my heels, my cuticles and other “dry spots” seem to the hardest to clean. This is me, Jenny K and Jenn afterwards.

20130401-125255.jpg

The Mister took this photo of me and I changed it to my Facebook profile photo. My father asked me why I was dressed like a zombie.

20130401-125318.jpg

We painted the ceiling in the kitchen. The Mister used the wrong paint (semi gloss and plain white) to do touch up awhile back. Not using flat made the biggest difference and left our ceiling spotted.

20130401-125450.jpg

He was fearful that we’d have to cut in the whole thing but it was much easier than that. We were still glad he taped the molding so he could roll as close to it as possible. He lightly sanded the spots, which made a vast improvement, and rolled the whole ceiling. I did some cutting in, where some stain got on the ceiling when they were sprayed, and we’re pretty pumped with the results.

20130401-125607.jpg

So much better.

Sunday night, I did my first coat of touch up paint around the room. Monday night, I did my second coat. It was to cover up the residual spray. Unfortunately, we had to have the cabinets sprayed after they were installed to get the doors and moldings (made by our final cabinet maker) to match the boxes (made by our first cabinet maker). So, we’re glad to have it looking better and I’ll share photos and details of that later. Right now, I got a cute baby to show you.

This fresh baby was born Friday morning. Congrats and love to Kia!

The weather was great this weekend. It really felt like Spring. The flea market is next weekend and the March market is the kick off to the Spring and Summer flea markets and yard sales. We went to Lowes and was excited to see this by the front door.

20130317-201713.jpg

It’s the most wonderful time of the year.

We went to Lowes to buy a medicine cabinet for our bathroom. We haven’t installed it yet as we’re doing some patching to smooth out the edges where the old cabinet was. You can see what I’m talking about in the photo below.

20130317-202104.jpg

It obviously makes The Mister feel very glamorous.

We hung a bunch of art in the office.

20130317-202431.jpg

All of this plus two other pieces.

The walls in our home office are gallery style. I’ll have a post on it soon. The wall when you walk in hasn’t had anything on it, so it looks much more finished.

Oh, sit on it

West Elm just finished a 15% off sale on their upholstery. Originally, I had my eye on the Victor Armchair. It has great lines but the plain fabric leaves something to be desired. So, I was crazy for the flower print by Sarah Campbell.

victor armchair back

Baby got back.

The Mister and I went to West Elm as I wanted to see this chair in person and purchase throws for our current chairs. I was disappointed that they don’t carry this chair because it’s considered a custom piece. Therefore, it cannot be returned. Even more upsetting, they don’t have fabric samples. So, it’s a gamble and one that we didn’t take. It’s so beautiful and I love the shades of green. Maybe one day they’ll have a pillow. I doubt it, but I’m bummed out that I didn’t even get to molest it touch the fabric.

We did end up buying some chairs. We bought two leather Sedgwick Chairs.

Sedgwich recliner

Y’all, they’re seriously comfortable.

sedgwick recliner open

 They’re recliners.

The Mister has wanted a recliner for a long time. He had one long ago but it was massive and The Colonel liked to “make out” with it. This means that he licked it. I called it “The Potato” and once we moved into our house we gave it to his brother. It fit in our apartment, but it took up a huge amount of our living room in the house. The 1950s were not prepared for The Potato. I’ll have to find a photo for y’all and I must show you what the new chairs look like when the second one comes in.

I recently found a set of brass deer and wanted them. However, I thought the $73 price was not only oddly specific but higher than expected.

20130224-224638.jpg

The one on the right was around a foot tall. I would enjoy a larger set like below.

I have a small collection of brass animals and I’m always on the look out for them. A little brass menagerie. Jenny from Little Green Notebook featured a DIY of spray painting animal figurines. (read it here) They could be cute in a children’s room on a high shelf. I doubt they could take much usage/touching and would need to be “look not touch.”

Here are some of my brass animals around the house.

You’ll see this dresser again next week.

We’re missing photos of two ducks and swan. Obviously I have a brass swan.

This weekend I went to The Antiques and Garden Show and enjoyed it. My recap is posting this week and you may have seen some of the greatness of you follow me on Instagram. (I’m Rachael__Anne. )

During the show, I bought two pieces of butterfly taxidermy. I’ve wanted some for a while but wanted very simple pieces. I’ve been to Key West a few times the past two years and have visited the butterfly conservatory twice while there. I knew they had no harm pieces but always worried about getting them home and most of their pieces were not the simple presentation I wanted. So, I was happy to find a booth of no harm butterfly taxidermy this weekend.

20130210-194728.jpg

20130210-194804.jpg

I thought their prices were reasonable as each piece I bought was $32. This seemed especially true after I asked how they were made. Basically, they purchased an area of the rain forest to “save it” and consider the butterflies farm raised. They collect butterflies once they die naturally. Each butterfly is placed in an individual envelope to dry. If they look good and their wings are not messed up torn or wrinkled, then they put some formaldehyde in the body and have to reattach the wings to the body.

I bought two. One includes a Monarch and was one of only two frames in the booth that included a Monarch. The gentleman at the booth told me that Monarchs are can be difficult for them as their wings typically tear. Both include “98 butterflies.” Here they are on the wall in our bedroom.

butterfly art on wall

They fit the space really well as I have only a sliver of wall between the window and wardrobes in our bedroom. It’s my side of the bed and I wanted some art there. So, I’m pretty stoked how they fit so well.  I’m so happy that I’m going to show you another photo of our room where the room is not touched up and our bed is, in fact, not cute.

This message is brought to you by “Keep It Real Monday.”

Jenny with Little Green Notebook has some great photos of butterfly art and some good faux options if you’re interested in putting in a little DIY.
