Today’s post is a twofer. You get a War Paint Wednesday (Clarisonic idea) and a before and after. Don’t get use to the over achievement.

We took down the towel holder in the bath awhile back. It was not centered over the toilet (see the photo here) and was looking shabby. However, we didn’t expect to see this under it.

spot from towel holder in bath

We put a fake plant in front of it for well over a year (you can see that here) and have wondered what to do. We considered “stealing” a tile from behind the toilet but the tiles are set in such strong mortar we were fearful of it. Finally, I realized a hook would cover it well and was actually needed.

I looked at many hooks online and at the usual suspects – Lowes and Home Depot. I purchased a few and returned them. As most of them were brushed nickel and we needed chrome. Additionally, most of the backs/plates were too big or too small. A few weeks went by and I happened down the bath aisle at Home Depot, the one with the towel rack collections and such, and found this.

futura hooks from home depot

Seriously, I thought I heard trumpets.

The screw for it was on the underneath. So, we could still insert it but it wouldn’t require the same amount of work to look drilled in. (We have no desire to drill into the tile.) It was chrome and the styling fits the style of the bath. It was simple and a rectangle. I was sure it was the same size as the spot. I grabbed two and practically ran to find The Mister.

The Mister grabbed some mounting tape before we left. We chose Scotch’s Extreme Mounting Tape. We probably could have used something less “extreme” as it doesn’t need to hold 20 pounds. However, we decided it was better to be safe with too much than risk them falling off or being shabby. We would suggest using it if you’re doing a similar project.

Luckily, I was right and the hook was almost the exact same size as the spot in the tile. So, we quickly tackled this project. The screw in the bottom of the hook kept the flat mounting plate in place.

Then, we added a small strip of mounting tape to the mounting plate.

The Mister was a little nervous with putting them on the tile. It’d be reversible if not put on correctly, but I was being pretty specific on their placement. Finally, he agreed that I should just do it. I removed the red protective lining from the tape and lined the top of the hook to the top of the spot on the tile. Then, I pressed it on. I used a good amount of pressure.

I was super jazzed and put the other one up. Though the left side of our tile did not have a spot, I felt another hook was needed for balance and to look purposeful.

bath hooks

Here’s how I use the hooks in “real life.” (This is not totally true as the right hook usually has a face towel on it. I was washing them when I took the photo.)

clarisonic hook

Using it as a holder for The Clarisonic has been awesome for letting it dry. It was a happy surprise. I have found that when I try to dry my Clarisonic, usually the bristles get smushed on one side and heads are not cheap. So, I’m hoping this will extend the life of them. Full disclosure: you have to hit it at the right angle for it to stay. I haven’t gotten it to stay every time. It usually take a few tries. I gotta find the sweet spot.

We’ve had the hooks up for about a month and have had no issues. I’m so glad we found the hooks and it was a simple project. It looks tremendously better. Young House Love tackled the same kind of towel bar spots in their tile here (a good fix if it’s under the window) and here (I like our fix better for by the sink. However, it’s a good idea for above the toilet.)

Don’t look at me

I encourage you to not look at me as I look pretty rough. My ears are stopped up so I’m kind of hard of hearing, my nose is running so tissues are a must and soup is what is for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It’s pretty ugly around here. So, let’s look elsewhere for good things.

First, Jamie at isuwannee is having a Christmas giveaway.

xmasgiveaway_blog

Don’t be a donkey. If you win you should give it to me. We’ll call it a get well present.

Next, Jenny at MFAMB is having half off paintings through December. Want to know what a “Big Gay Carwash” looks like? You gotta go here. Actually, I don’t trust y’all to do it. So, I’ll just show it to you.

Amanda (MODG) had her baby. Her birth story is a trilogy. Spoiler alert: In the end, she has a baby.

However, in her classy style MODG tells us like it is.

I’m going into my office today in all my glory.  I am feeling better and fever free. So, high fives all around.

While watching DVRed episodes of Secrets From a Stylist I saw this.

My reaction was yelling “Yeah! Throw that on the couch!”, which I’d like to note that’s what she did. That’s because we’re connected awesome. This is what it looked like.

Yes, all these photos of the episode are from me taking photos of my television. Deal with it and be thankful I have DVR to rewind a million times with.

However, the ladyfriend getting her house did informed viewers that mud cloths could also be used as rugs. I didn’t know what a mud cloth was so I quickly realized I needed to get on it and referred to the internet.

From different sources that are listed throughout, here is what I gather: Mud cloths are made in Mali by artisans of the Bamana Tribe. They take cotton strips and dye them using natural materials like tree bark. This strips are then sewn together. This site has a lot of good information including what the symbols on mud cloths represent. They sell mud cloths but it appears you cannot view them in advance so you cannot be gauranteed one that is only black and white.

here

I want one in black and white. So, I kept searching with little luck. I found one eBay listing for this 32×46″ mudcloth.

Then, Jamie posted photos of a couch she has for sale.

I couldn’t agree more.

The New York Times shared this chair from the 2008 Kips Bay Decorator Show House.

here

They say that mud cloth-style fabric is available for $5 a yard at Yara International, 6 East 125th Street (Fifth Avenue), (212) 289-3842. We’ll see about that. By the way, the Sexy Afro Glam episode of Secrets From a Stylist had one of the best reveal reactions I’ve ever seen. Here is a photo I took of it for you.

It makes The Colonel uncomfortable. He usually pulls his ears back when I watched the episode.

Sprung

Me having a crush on Jamie Meares is nothing new. (Here for example) I want to work with/follow/admire her as she started her design business as a career change and is not a designer from her schooling. We have similar styles – she loves color and pattern. This means I like her store Furbish and today is the last day for her Spring Sale.

(Look at my girl using Peter Dunham’s Fig Leaf fabric – one of my favorites)

Here are some things you should buy:

No, thank you

Now, the word “sprung” has me singing Sir Mix-A-Lot’s class “Baby Got Back.”  These items make me want to “pull up a truck” and “I’m hooked and I can’t stop staring.”

If you didn’t watch Mad Men last night then I have nothing to say to you. Actually, I do have something to say to you. It’s The Mister that you have to deal with. Whether you watch Mad Men or not you likely know that Jon Hamm is very attractive and he’s quite funny. So, let me tell you about Emotions With Jon Hamm in case you haven’t heard. It’s a tumblr site with this to say about itself: “One day, Jon Hamm realized that he is the best human in the universe in the having a face department, so he decided to bless us all by becoming an actor. Emotions With Jon Hamm is a celebration of his craft.”

With one of my favorite men Jason Sudeikis

First, I apologize for originally saying the title was a reference to TLC. I’m embarrassed. Second, we went to Lowe’s to purchase this hardware this past weekend but The Mister was not feeling it. The “pointy” knobs bothered him.

Therefore, we took another look at a Kraft Maid knob and pull set and ended up ordering them. They are $7 something for a knob and $8 something for a pull.

Do you like my phone cover? It’s from J. Crew.

I agree with The Mister that the flat face knob does not have the potential to inquire like the one above. However, I can’t say I’m jazzed about them. Of course, that could be attributed to the fact that I just want a kitchen to put the hardware in at this point. What hardware does get me jazzed?

This hardware is fantastical!

It’s major.

I asked Jessica about the brass and glass pull and the faceted brass knob because they make my heart leap. They are not in production for another month or so and she hopes to get pricing to me within the next few days. All I know thus far is that she’s considering a change from glass to acrylic/lucite and the pull’s hole to hole dimensions is 4.25.” I’m a mixture of excited, nervous and anxious to get her pricing. Also, saying “hole to hole” makes me feel weird.

Today, I’m bragging and thanking while sharing a few places The Lovely Lifestyle has been seen recently.

How to Add “Old House” Character and Charm to Your Newer Home series by Beneath My Heart
I saw this series was going on via Pinterest and was surprised and happy to get a pingback from Traci.

Jackie from Mad Jackie was nice enough to reach out to me about not only posting the image from my 30 before 30 but pinning it.

That pin of hers is bananas.

You’re reading that correctly. 1,419 likes, 26 comments and 10,851 repins. B-A-N-A-N-A-S. Along with all the other times it has been pinned. If you want to see what I’m talking about here is how you can check pins from The Lovely Lifestyle.

1. You go to something that you know is pinned from it.

2. Go to the bottom, left-hand corner where it says “Also from thelovelylifestyle.wordpress.com” – see the arrow in the photo above.

3. Browse all the pins that The Lovely Lifestyle had received. You can see who originally pinned it and how many likes and repins it has recieved.

Being featured, my recent stream of subscribers, getting emails from readers all makes me feel a mixture of pride and “What the WHAT?!” My lil’ corner of the internet takes some dedication and there are definitely times when I think, “I’d rather watch something trashy and mind-numbing like Dance Moms or MTV: The Challenge – Battle of the Exes” (Don’t judge me. Both are symptoms of being on the road.) but I try to put something out here for you – whoever you are. Of course, not all posts are for you. Don’t get stingy. My posts are often for myself, to chronicle events or log inspiration and products. As you likely noticed from my weigh in posts, I’m beginning to use The Lovely Lifestyle as a journal. Of course, as I grow in the amount of personal information I share, I’ll still have my limits. The Mister will still be The Mister and I’ll keep “stranger danger” rules in mind. Yet, I’m becoming more comfortable with y’all hanging around and with myself. Still, I often cringe when I read my subscription feed and catch misspelled or misused words – like the “there” instead of “their” in my Weight Watchers live blog. But, you seem to forgive me and I need to learn from you and forgive myself. I’ve had some personal matters, struggles and scares the past 18+ months and this blog, this place, turned into a creative outlet for me. It has allowed me to refocus. It’s made me think about other stuff. It’s been a good touchpoint. I’ve appreciated having you around. You haven’t known, but you helped me.

Thank you for being a friend.
You’re heart is true.
You’re a pal and a confidant.

If you didn’t press play and jam out, you may need to stop reading this blog.

There is no excuse for that type of “I’m too cool” behavior.

Gloria is a beeeeeeeeep

If you heard someone yell “noooooooo” Sunday night, it was me. I’ve been lusting, coveting the Gloria’s Garden rug from Anthropologie for awhile now.

We had beautiful wool rugs but we put them in storage because they didn’t match our decided aesthetic. So, we currently have no rug in the dining room and a West Elm jute rug in the living room. The jute rug has been a toss up. I like the texture but the texture did not love our wood floors and it left some marks on it. The Mister and I were not happy. We put another rug under it (seen here) and have since put a thicker rug pad under it. However, it still makes me a tad nervous. Of course, full disclosure, I would take an excuse to get the Gloria Garden rug. However, it’s hooked and it made me question it’s care a little. So, I resisted. Until Jamie said she used it in an entryway.

So, I asked her (via Twitter) if it held up well and she said yes. So, I went back to it and wouldn’t you know the round one was on sale from $900 something to $500 something. I decided to wait, pause for 24 hours. I should have known. I really should have known but sure enough I returned to their site on Sunday and it was sold out. Additionally, the 8×10 sized rug was sold out. I called my store and the company number. They’re sold out everywhere and the round is definitly discontinued.  They couldn’t/wouldn’t comment on the 8×10 size but said two things that upset me.

1. They had no information in their systems about it returning.
2. I told them I couldn’t add it to my wishlist and the lady at the Anthro 800 number’s response was “Oh…hmmmm. Tisk. Yeah, I’m sorry.”

Beeeeeeeeeep. Gloria is a tease.

Now, remember I was concerned about it being hooked. So, I also considered the Leopard Belgique indoor/outdoor rug from Ballard Designs.

I liked it because I argue that leopard can act as a neutral. Additionally, with it being indoor/outdoor I like it from a care standpoint. Then, I stumbled upon it on Little Green Notebook. Since Jenny is active on Twitter, I decided to ask her if she which colorway she went with and she responded black. I was leaning black, but I kept going between it and the brown. So, I ordered the 7’10″ as Ballard had free shipping and 10% off through last night. It doesn’t arrive till January, but I’m pretty excited about. Plus, it looks pretty good with the Gloria Garden rug incase I get the 5×7 for our living room.

Recently, I decided to catch up on Effortless Style a blog by Camila Pavone. While searching I saw this photo of her office.

found here

You may recognize the fabric from my folding screens. After some digging I found this post about reupholstering her loveseat.

We have a loveseat that needs to be reupholstered (you’ve seen it here, here and here) and I had considered covering it in Wonderland Pearl, but decided to use it on my folding screen instead. I love the fabric. I’ve been thinking about what else I could cover in it.

I’m still considering adding another panel to each section of my folding screens. I could go for more fabric in my room, yet a loveseat and a folding screen is a bit much.

Sarah Richardson ( we know I adore her) used it. Of course she did, because the fabric is awesome.

This photo is from Sarah 101. So far only two episodes have been shown on HGTV USA. The episode the fabric is seen is titled “Vibrant Living Room.” I was chaneling her. It’s a special talent.
