I ate nothing but salads this weekend. That’s a lie. I ate at The Southern on a double date with my girl Jenn and her husband Neal. (Are any of your husbands growing hair for Movember? Are ladies allowed to participate in this whole “not shaving for the month” thing?) Let’s move on. I ate mostly salads this weekend.

This was my salad inspiration.

It was in preparation for this week and all the other holiday festivities coming our way starting tomorrow. I hope all y’all have a wonderful Thanksgiving. I may not know you, but I hope the best for you and yours.

I’ve been traveling a lot. Most of it for work and some of it for fun. With just a few days shy of a month, I’ve been to the following:

  • Orlando (New parade idea here)
  • Charleston (Lustful thoughts here)
  • St. Louis
  • The Bahamas

You guess which one was for fun. You’re right. It was St. Louis.

Now, we have Thanksgiving. The scale was already tipping and after this week I think I’m going to gain all the weight I lost. Hello again 25+ pounds. Let’s here from the place I get all my advice – Pinterest.

Damn you Pinterest. You beautiful genius.

Big timin’

Watch your back, or back fat, because I’m down a a pant size and a half! Yes, the half counts. I’m in between sizes but I fit my butt in some jeans I couldn’t wear before this week.

WHOOP!

WHOOP WHOOP!

Now, let me show you a kinda cute photo of myself (don’t pay attention to my cheesy face) from a few months ago.

I was unsure of this dress on the hanger but I decided during my first wear (photo above) it was cute. The second time I’ve worn it was yesterday and I got many compliments. It reminds me of Mossimo. Yes, I’m in a hotel room because that’s where I usually stay. Speaking of gypsies traveling ladies, my mother recently called me  from the road and said the following: “I’m by an outlet mall and it’s not terrible. They may actually have something we’d want.” I love her. So, I sent her in Banana Republic for a shopping trip via text message. I swear half of my texts with my mother are photos of items either she or I have sent to each. We no longer say much. We give little if any explanation with our photos. Then, you simply respond “yes” or “no” if you want/like/approve of the item(s). Here is an example from when she and Daddy went hat shopping for the Derby:

We don’t know why he doesn’t look at the camera. As my great-grandmother said, “They never quite got the boy out of him.”

I chose option 2. We may need to upgrade to Facetime for some shopping trips. However, I’m not buying many clothes as I continue to lose. So, nobody else encourage me to text shop unless it’s for accessories or home decor. That’s always okay.

My mother always taught me to trust my gut. When things don’t seem right or “don’t add up” it is my internal signal to move away. It was a signal to not trust whatever’s presented or to flee from the situation. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or genetically modified crops or food make everything within my instinct (my gut) say not good, problematic and terrifying. I had not heard of GMOs until a few months ago. Though I was alarmed by their common day existance, I wasn’t surprised. My complacenty is unacceptable. I need to be proactive to protect myself and the ones I love from potential long-term harm. We should not experiment with our bodies and our planet.

A genetically modified food is one that has lab-replicated genes from other animals or plants in order to give the food new characteristics. New characteristics could be a number of things like resistance to insects or drought. Taking genes from one species and putting in another is sometimes referred to as Genetic Engineering (GE) or Genetic Modification (GM) – they are one and the same – and the process was introduced in the early 90s. Basically, it mutates your food.  More information about what GMOs are can be found here and information on why they should be avoided is here.

GMOs are in 80% of our processed food. Unless the packaged is labled organic or specifically labled non-GMO, they are likely present. Like the Dirty Dozen, there are the Top 8 DM food crops. They are: corn, soybeans, canola, cottonseed, sugarbeets, Hawaiian papaya and some zucchini and yellow squash. A Shopping Guide can be found here to help you navigate away from GM products. Certified organic food cannot intentionally include GM ingrediants. Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods have banned GM ingrediants from their house brands.

Countries – including Japan, Austrialia, and the entire European Union – have banned or severly restricted GM crops. Many of these same countries require food labels to state if the product contains GMOs. However, the United States is not one of them. 1992 the FDA rules there’s no “material” difference between traditional and GM crops and the way it is produced doesn’t make a material difference. Many feel like labeling food appropriately, listing if they contain GMOs or not, is a simple solution to educate consumers of what they’re consuming and allowing them to make the choice of whether to eat the product. Prevention has petitioned the FDA for the “Just Label It” campaign. The petition states the following:

I am writing to urge the FDA to require the mandatory labeling of genetically engineered foods. I have a right to know about the food I eat and what I feed my family.

In America, we pride ourselves on having choices and making informed decisions. Under current FDA regulations, we don’t have that choice when it comes to GE ingredients in the foods we purchase and feed our families. Labeling is essential for me to choose whether or not I want to consume or feed my family genetically engineered foods.

Genetically engineered foods are required to be labeled in 15 European Union nations, Russia, Japan, China, Australia, New Zealand, and many other countries around the world. As an American, I firmly believe I should also have the right to know if my foods have been genetically engineered.

A recent poll released by ABC News found that 93 percent of the American public wants the federal government to require mandatory labeling of genetically engineered foods. As ABC News stated, “Such near-unanimity in public opinion is rare.”

I hope you will listen to me and the other 93 percent of the American public who want mandatory labeling. Please show your support for the interests of the American people by labeling genetically engineered foods.

You can sign it here. I hope you do.

Last week I gained 1.8 pounds. I wasn’t surprised with the week I was having, yet this did not keep me from making an ugly face at my “Score Keeper.” Plus,  I was bloated like I’d been eating Chinese for days. (I hadn’t eaten any Chinese and now feel like I missed my opportunity.) My goal for this week has been to not gain anything else. However, I’m sure I’ve gained some.  The past two weeks have been stressful. This week, we had a death in the family and I’ve been sick. Overall weekly rating: Funky. Therefore, I’ve decided to purchase something that will remind me to get my chubby butt moving and stop putting food in my mouth. It’s also going to make me feel like a fool and give people the creeps.

Get a six-pack and scare the bejesus out of folks in seconds!

Call now! Operators are standing by.

I wonder if someone was baking brownies with this.

Then, they realized “I can keep shoving my face with ooey gooey goodness and just place this pan around my mid-section.” Additionally, I wonder if they have to wear a girdle over the AbEnhancer in order to smooth out their “abs.” Plus, there are 12 abdominals so people could wonder what is going on as I have a feeling that nobody not everyone that buys this at 2:00 a.m. off an infomercial is as thin as the dude on the box. So, it’s not for fatties but it is for guys with light  stomach hair.

Have a great weekend and I’m sorry that you puked in your mouth.

I’m an awful person and haven’t given you a WW update in weeks, months. I finally found a meeting time that I like, but I don’t get there early enough to people watch or draft my posts like I was.  I don’t get there early enough as I go to my work out class from 8:30 – 9:30 and my meeting starts at 10:00 a.m. I say that like I’ve being doing that consistently for a long time. I cannot tell a lie. I’ve done it for maybe 6 weeks. However, I’m pushing it to get to my meeting on time. So, I don’t have any stories. People are still wearing as little clothes as possible. I’m concerned for the summer months.

I haven’t done as well with Weight Watchers as I expected. I set high expectations for myself, which is something I do. I need to cut back on it as they’re not always reasonable and then I’m disappointed. So, I haven’t lost weight as fast as I had thought/planned/hoped. However, I’m down 15.6 pounds and I’m over my 5% goal. According to WW, I’m in Week 13 and with 15.6 pounds that’s 1.2 pounds a week which is what is suggested as a healthy weight loss speed.

Here is my recap: (You’ll notice there are only 12 weeks listed though I just said I’m in Week 13. That’s because Week One is when you weigh in at Weight Watchers.)

Week 1: -3.8
Week 2: -2.6
Week 3: +.6
Week 4: +1.6
Week 5: -5.8
Week 6: +2.4
Week 7: -2.4
Week 8: +2.2
Week 9: -1.8
Week 10: -1.6
Week 11: +2.4
Week 12: -7.0

That’s right last week I lost 7 pounds. Of course, this means this week I’m likely to gain. As you can tell I seem to lose and gain the same few pounds over and over. It’s maddening, but I’m working on it. I’m focusing on the victories and learning from them.

Here is what I’ have learned so far:

  • Tracking food is an important key for me
  • I need to be more vigilant about tracking points and carbs
  • I do better when I watch carbs. For example, if two items are both worth 10 points each one may be 20 carbs while the other is 30. When choosing the item with less carbs, I tend to have a better weight loss week.
  • If I’m home I have to do a work out class. I suck at doing DVDs at home. I think this is because I feel like I don’t have a space to do them. Additionally, when I’m home I feel like I need to use that time wisely. So, I’m going to think on that.
  • Eating at home is the best thing to do, so without our kitchen I’ve struggled. However, we recently moved the oven back in as we were tired of being without.
  • I have an awful, terrible, no good habit of getting second helpings. Last week, I was vigilant about filling my second helping with a salad instead of entrée or whatever else we had.

I cannot go to my Saturday class this week, so I’m weighing in tomorrow during my lunch. I’ll let you know how it goes. Promise.

As you know, I call The Colonel Hoof-Hearted a couple things. Man-Bear-Pug and Pig are the most common nicknames. He answers to all of them because not only is he adorable, he is smart. I love him for many reasons. Here are two:

1. He gets me.

2. He is lazy. This may correlate with number one.

Now, after Friday, you know I’m trying to get my butt in gear and become healthier. It was difficult. First, I was on the road last week. Here are random road thoughts: Can the people below hear me jumping around? I’d hate me if they can. Why is the workout room a glass box in the lobby? I don’t want people watching me. Wait. Can those people see me watching them? Yes. Yes they can indeed. Hmmmmm. Gross. (You can expect a travel post later.) Second, we had stuff to do this weekend. I needed to do domestic stuff (cleaning, errands) that don’t happen much when I’m gone. Plus, we had Momma’s birthday and a wedding. However, I stayed commited and worked out. This was Pig and I.

I think the boobs being little v’s is funny.

Speaking of boobs… I’m pretty sure they should make sport underwear not just sport bras. (Yes, you just read that. I’m sharing and you’re listening. Leave a comment.) I often wonder, while jumping around like an idiot while watching impossibly coordinated ladies on a DVD, if it is bad for my skin. I’m not tight and toned or else I’d be teaching the workout. Therefore, I worry if a full on compression outfit is needed. I’ve seen those sweat belts. Maybe they are used as a workout girdle.

I have always been a fan of Miss Piggy. She wore a bathing suit when working out.

Taking advice from a Muppet sounds like a good idea.

I have wobbly bits.

I always have.

You have them too.
If you don’t have them, I would like to speak to you privately.

The issue with my wobbly bits is that they have multiplied. It’s problematic. I’ve gained a number of pounds over the past year and I blame it on a few things. However, we’re not going to get into that right now. Blaming things will not fix my issue.

Part of having a lovely lifestyle is being healthy. I’m not healthy. Additionally, a lovely lifestyle should include confidence and self-compassion. I’m lacking in those things too. I will consider ripping a camera out of stranger/friend/anyone’s hand. I have begged not to leave the house. I’m out of control.

To have fun, and to place a goal in mind, The Mister and I are going on a cruise in September. I have three months to do as best as possible. I’m getting myself together. Of course, I will share my work with you. I may share more often than just on “Fitness Friday.” I plan to share recipes, eating habits, work out success and fails along with pitfalls and inspiration. It’s about to get personal around here.

Think of me, as I start boot camp Tuesday morning at the horrific time of 5:45 a.m. My dears, this is an incredible feat for me.

When I signed up for boot camp I had to sign off on some rules. However, there were three that may be difficult for me. They are:

1. I agree that I will not consume alcohol during the month of Boot Camp.

I rarely consume alcohol. However, I’m the type that instantly wants something when told I cannot have it. I like having options.

2. I agree not to use foul language during boot camp.

This may be difficult for me. I am liable to drop a few dirty words when I’m tired and unhappy. Really, this has become an unflattering habit for me in my daily life.

3. I agree not to eat or say the words Twinkie, Donuts, Ho-Hos, Ding Dongs, or Cup Cake during boot camp.

The only thing I may have difficulty with is cupcakes. I may call someone a ho-ho (notice my difficulty with rule #2) but I wouldn’t eat that particular Hostess cake.

I’m going three days a week – I couldn’t bear the thought of five days a week. Also, I’m traveling this month and cannot to the complete camp. Therefore, I’m going three times this week and three times next week. However, I’m hoping this two week camp will do me some good.

Frankly, I’m worried. Terrified may be a better fitting word. I have been sick since Friday and I do not do well in the morning. However, I have committed to this and I desperately need a kick in the pants with adapting to and taking on healthier habits. My email to the trainer that leads the boot camp was almost sad, “I’m not in decent shape, nor would I consider myself an active person. Therefore, should I have some stepping stone to fitness before this?” Thankfully, he responded that this was a common question or concern but that I should be fine.

I’ll let you know if he lied or not.
