Good v Bad Country

In honor of CMA Fest this weekend and Wednesday’s post, we’re gonna take a look at what good country is and what bad country is.

Where are those ducks going in that hat? How did they all find the same hat? Are they part of the Red Hat Society?

You can be country and like Greek Key details. In my world of country you can. You don’t have to but it’d be best if you were open to it.

I saw an old friend weeks ago at The Color Run.  (Hey Ashley Elizabeth!) She told me that she reads the blog and I asked her what her  style was. The response was “country meets the 1920s.” I’ve never heard that, and I want to know more.

A lot of people are scared of country decor and I can understand why. However, there is such a thing as modern country. Country Living, Southern Living and Better Homes and Gardens provides us with fresh takes on what country decor can be. It’s not all wallpaper borders that have ducks with blue ribbons or puffy valences trimmed in lace.

I was inspired to dig around and see what I could find that may be “country meets the 1920s.” The image below was the best of what I found. There is a great mix going on. The couch is a bright floral, but it’s not “Dusty Rose.” (I dig this couch.) Chinoiserie art flanks an old set of doors. The coffee table is an old trunk but it has a great color and a trim detail.

I’d love to hear or see what your take on “country meets the 1920s” is. Of course, I’m going to invite myself to Ashley Elizabeth’s place.

Do you have any favorite country decor pictures?

Lillys

We left our favorite Mexican restaurant Sunday afternoon and The Mister gently told me that Lilly Pulitzer died. I wasn’t happy. I like a colorful and resourceful lady. (The link is from the New York Times article on her life. I suggest it.)

She became a fashion icon for her tropical, wildly colored shift dresses and the brand was revived in 1993. A home line followed. There as a partnership with Lee Jofa and I kept a couple of the ads because I loved them so.

I love gingham. I like it on the walls in both the photo above and below. However, I probably prefer it on a larger scale.

I will have gingham walls – someday. I’m gonna have to do them myself or hire someone because The Mister says they look complicated.  They do look complicated and that’s the reason they’ve not happened already. But they will.

I’ve had four posts that have featured Lilly Pulitzer’s style and brand: the home collectionLonny’s article and inspirational photos, gingham walls and the color pink. I encourage you to look at photos of her creations, if you need a little pep in your style.

We’re I’m playing a game called “Table Switcheroo.” It involves me changing the tables around our living room/main room of the house’s couch. There have been a few options, but I think I’m sticking with the small round campaign ones.

First, I cleaned off the lucite console and lugged it over.

Too big.

Then, I went decidedly smaller.

We will discuss the awesome lamps later.

We’re sticking with these for awhile.

I like their smaller scale. The room feels lighter. However, they’re half the size of what we used to have there. I’m sticking with them as I believe their scale is fine. Here are some pretty photos that show I’m right – little tables by sofas work.

I recently found a set of brass deer and wanted them. However, I thought the $73 price was not only oddly specific but higher than expected.

The one on the right was around a foot tall. I would enjoy a larger set like below.

I have a small collection of brass animals and I’m always on the look out for them. A little brass menagerie. Jenny from Little Green Notebook featured a DIY of spray painting animal figurines. (read it here) They could be cute in a children’s room on a high shelf. I doubt they could take much usage/touching and would need to be “look not touch.”

Here are some of my brass animals around the house.

We’re missing photos of two ducks and swan. Obviously I have a brass swan.

I’m trying to come up with ideas on what to do with our television in our living room. My current idea is to surround it with a bookshelf or built in. Here are my inspirational photos.

Of course, I just like this room. Big gold mirror. Clear coffee table. Garden stool. Books everywhere. All of it. However, we couldn’t do a series of bookshelves. We don’t have the space. I just want the one.

I don’t think that’s too much to ask.

I think The Mister could make it. I don’t want anything fancy and these instructions/directions seem like something we could use.

A few days ago, while doing my grocery shopping at Kroger, I saw this.

20130201-225851.jpg

Insert me stopping mid-aisle and backing up

I was at the Green Hills Kroger so I wasn’t at a Kroger Marketplace. I’ve only been to a Marketplace on the road but know some outlying areas have them. I haven’t seen Kroger sell dishes before and I was real excited about them being Blue Willow. Plus, there sale signs.

20130201-230853.jpg

Here is the only picture of pricing that is readable.

20130204-100958.jpg

After scrutinizing photos, here are the prices I’ve confirmed:

  • Dinner plate $5.24
  • Salad plate $3.75
  • Cereal bowl $3.75
  • Soup bowl $3.75
  • Large serving bowl $14.99
  • 14″ Oval Platter $20.24
  • Covered casserole $44.99

I think a grouping of Blue Willow can be really pretty on a wall.

However, I don’t think it looks great on your back.

I’m all over updating our bedroom, hence the curtain update. However, I’m not in the mood to repaint the room. I like the color we have, it’s a neutral with a pink undertone (as pink as I think The Mister will let me go) so I need to match it to something. Our current headboard matches it as did our previous curtains. In fact, they were perfect matches. That’s why I’m not counting those pieces as goners. I just want something fresh.

Pillows are the quickest way to make things match up or “blend.”  Of course, I’m thinking of fabric I’ve lusted over and here are my options for you to weigh in on.

1. Chiang Mai – This fabric is crazy expensive and has been insanely popular for a few years. It has a cult like following. I’ve always coveted it for curtains but have refused to pay for the yardage. I’m just not comfortable spending $1,500+ on curtains. If that’s not something you’re concerned about then we should talk. However, I was thinking I’d buy a set of pillows. The set is still not cheap.

here

2. Sunara  – Once again, not cheap and from F. Schumacher. I could buy three of these for the price of the set above. I don’t need three. I’m just letting you know for your benefit and price comparison. I feel like if i looked hard/long enough I could find a knock off of it. Have you seen anything?

here

Additionally, I can buy a yard of  either fabric the price of the pillows. The one yard of Chiang Mai is ~$30 cheaper than the made set. The one yard of Sunara is the cost of one made pillow. Will my pillows be as nice as their pillows? Absolutely not.

I know which way I’m leaing, but let’s take a vote on which pattern you like the most.

I’d say we need to keep this quiet but The Mister has been busy and hasn’t been keeping up to date here. (Insert side eye)

DIY: Curtain slip cover

This weekend I made a cover/second layer/slip cover/new curtains for our bedroom. I decided to tack the curtain panels I made to the curtains we already had hanging – kind of like a slip cover.  This kept me from having to line the new panels and gave the finished product some volume.

Here’s the finished product.

Here’s what I did to get there:

1. I purchased two king sized (112″ x 102″) flat sheets. The sheets I purchased were DVF’s Island Clover. I got them for $24.99 each at TJMaxx and made two curtains from each sheet. I like to buy flat sheets as fabric.

2. I cut the 112″ in half in order to get two curtains. Then, I ironed the hems so the rough edge was covered (aka so they were finished).

First fold over

Then, I folded this once more so the unfinished edge was “tucked under.”
This is what I used as hem.

3. I used white thread, it’s what was used on the hems that already existed on the sheets, to sew the one cut side. Then, I ironed each panel.

4.  I took the top of the created curtain panel and simply hung it over the curtain rod like you would hang a towel on a towel bar. To decide on the length I made my own measurement – when the wide border matched up with the top of the blinds. I made my first tack stitch there, making sure to attach the back of the panel through the hanging panel to the front of the front panel. Additionally, you need to start the tack stitch from the back so the long stings are not seen. This photo may make more sense.

I decided to not sow a rod pocket on the curtain panels. First, I couldn’t come up with a way to do this that didn’t bother with the pocket in the already existing panel I was tacking to. Second, I like the previously hung curtains and wanted to sew to it as little as possible. So, I only tacked the sides. The rest of the fabric at the top is simply folded over, once again like a towel. I made sure to space out the folds and I think it looks more legit than it is.

5. Once I tacked the top of each curtain I did a long running tack stitch (if that’s not a thing I just made it into one) down the sides.

I attached the panel to the existing and hanging panel. You can see the thread on the back as this is me finishing a tack.

This is what the back looks like.

This what a tack looks like on the front.

I made sure to put the tacks on white spaces of the pattern. Additionally, I tried to put the tacks close to the hem of the original curtain. Once again, so I did less damage to the curtain underneath.

6. I was happy with them. They puddle a bit on the floor which is better than the curtains they are attached to. The original curtains are a pretty color, but I bought them from Linens N Things when they were going out of business. Therefore, when I got them home and they were too short I had to insert a panel into the bottom of them. That was my first sewing project – I was a little over zealous. They were still a smidge too short.  So, let’s admire the new curtains again.

Worldly

I’ve been trying to funnel some energy into our bedroom. This is nothing new. I’m always funneling energy into decorating our home. It’s my obsession hobby. Our room has gone through some transformations. Many things have been on (The Mister’s) To Blog About list. We made our headboard, repainted the room and tried several different curtain options. Next week, I’ll post some of what has happened in our bedroom.

That’s what she said.

Part of my issue with decorating our home can be that I like so much stuff. I become paralyzed by the options. I can tell and help you with what you should do all day. However, for myself it can be difficult. I see too much and have too many ideas. I want to try too many things. I’ve heard this is common with actual decorators or people who get sucked into decor. It makes me feel much better that occasionally Miles Redd doesn’t know what the f he’s doing either in his home.

Currently, global or world textiles are becoming a trend. I’m seeing it a lot in bedding, soft goods and accessories. Just in the past three weeks I’ve bought two pairs of shoes that would fall under this category. I believe part of this, especially in soft goods, is the evolution of people’s love of ikat. Here are some bedrooms with global textile bedding.

West Elm is offering hand-embroidered quilts from India. They all made from recycled saris and vary in size and color.

here

I bought a handmade Indian quilt from Spruce, a boutique in Brentwood. This is it.

I had a $15 credit and it still cost me $150. Yeah. Now, I realize comforters and other pieces of bedding are in this range and the West Elm blankets are smaller and $99. Still, I feel guilty. My plan was to bring it home and test it in the space. I didn’t know that linens were nonreturnable or I frankly probably wouldn’t have purchased it. You should make me feel better and tell me how pretty it is in the comments.

I do really like the black background and the mixture of blue, green, pink and yellow. I have a plan of attack on using it. Unfortunately, that plan included some curtains from IKEA but the one I was near this week was going through a renovation and had only 3 curtains in the marketplace. It was weird. So, as usual, I’m working on it and this holiday weekend is just the right time for me to do so.
