We've had a number of people come by for quotes on the porch. The majority are $15,000 to $20,000. The lowest we got was $8,000. Many would not let us do the demo ourselves.

We've decided to focus on the kitchen and likely do a pergola instead this spring. Those have been more than we thought too thus far. I think we're gonna have to tune into our inner DIY spirit. I keep waiting for Curb Appeal to come to our area.

I would get a quote to replace the porch and redo it with wood columns appropriate for the size of the house. It may not cost as much as you think. Also you can probably do the demo yourself. As far as landscaping any kind of hosta, holly ferns, mini crepe myrtle or drought tolerant evergreen will do well in your area. I like your blog and you seem to have the same kind of love affair with fabric that I do. Good luck.

Those "monkey brains" are nasty, I agree.

Little known fact - people in Mississippi celebrate the damn things. There's a small town, not far from Memphis, called Pontotoc. (I've been there, several times. Dont judge me.) They have a whole festival dedicated to them called the "Bodock Festival." (They call them Bodock's in MS.) They are completely useless. They cannot be eaten or used in useful way. But over 6,000 people show up annually to this festival. They just use them as recreation devices, they play games with them and what not. ANyways, just a useless piece of info I wanted to share with you.
