I like elephant ear plants and have purchased some. Next, on my list to purchase are Black Magic Elephant Ears. These plants have large heart-shaped leaves that can grow up to 2 inches long. Their colors ranges from forest green to dark purple. Their bulbs must be dug up when winter arrives. The best planting information I found was from Fine Gardening.
I wonder how long it took them to get their potted Black Magic Elephant Ears to be this lush?

I have “The Black Thumb of Death” and hope I don’t kill anything this year. Last year I killed quite a few plants. This upset me. I felt bad for wasting the money and my time. I became so frustrated last year with my plant carnage I took it out on one poor victim. I yelled at it. I said, “I loved and loved on you and you just gave up. You died! That’s the thanks I get? Did I smother you? Huh?” It was not a lovely moment.
Any gardening tips? Do you have any elephant ears?

I am so glad you posted this. I also have the The Black Thumb of Death.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE elephant ears. I planted two bulbs last summer and they ended up being halfway up the house in height, they got massive and I was so happy that my elephant ears got four times as big as dad’s!!! Elephant ears are definitely easy to care for, they don’t take much care at all so you should be fine.
I planted black elephant bulb yesterday – I am new at this and got the bulb from Home Depot.
When I opened the package the bulb felt as though it had several loose layers on the exterior. One end of the bulb is completely flat and the other a cone.
I have looked at several web sights looking for exact directions on how to prepare the bulb for planting , do I do anything to the bulb before planting? Do I remove the “loose paper” on it to find the “nipple” ?
PLEASE someone tell me exactly how to do this in plane old english- as for now it is potted and 6 inches deep sideways – will it grow????
Well, I’m absolutely no planting expert. However, I’ve heard that most bulbs will orientate themselves naturally. However, I’d imagine the pointed end should be at the top. I would leave the leaves on it.
